A Tennessee physiology class is one of few in the country where high school students
can dissect human cadavers, but more colleges are offering high school students
the chance to participate in special programs where they can learn more about the
workings of the human body.
The Minnesota Department of Education announced a series of statewide summits for
students to learn about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) opportunities
and careers in their communities. The summits will include regional businesses and
colleges, and feature interactive displays highlighting their exciting STEM opportunities.
Dancing through science class and singing through mathematics. That's how 20 Flagstaff
Unified School District teachers hope to be teaching after attending a Keeping Score
workshop Thursday at Coconino High School.

Edmond and Deer Creek seventh- and eighth-grade students met at Oklahoma Christian
University [last week] for the National Engineers Week Future City Competition.
The program, run by the nonprofit National Engineers Week Foundation, seeks to promote
technological literacy and engineering to more than 30,000 middle school students
representing 1,100 schools from across the nation.

Nearly 300 high school students from the region attended Tuesday's Regional STEM
Summit at Bemidji State University (BSU). According to the Enterprise, it was one
of eight Regional STEM Summits being presented around the state by the Minnesota
Department of Education (MDE) and the Minnesota High Tech Association. The emphasis
of the summit, which featured a program, exhibits and tours, was on the increasing
number of higher education and career opportunities in the STEM fields.

The Southeast Region Career & Technology Center (SRCTC) will be offering its annual
junior high summer academy in the areas of math, science, engineering and technology
in June 2008. The academy will be based on an initiative by the STEM Education Institute,
in Amherst, Massachusetts, and the classes will be more focused on engineering activities
for kids than in the past.
PUBLICATIONS
Author Joy Hakim's "Story of Science" series is drawing acclaim for humanizing science
by exploring the lives of scientists who made great discoveries. "I've been in science
education for almost 40 years, and I've never been as impressed with a series of
literature," said Juliana Texley of the National Science Teachers Association. "Joy's
text is clear, fun to read, understandable and very, very accurate. After decades
of teaching the material, I felt I finally understood the methodology."
