Diversity in STEM conference

The Iowa Department of Education in partnership with the Community Colleges of Iowa and Iowa Regent Universities will host the first Diversity in STEM conference addressing barriers to success in STEM career pathways for underrepresented students.

The goal of the conference is to create a forum for an exchange of ideas, promising practices, and proven strategies to address the low representation of diverse students in STEM fields in Iowa’s secondary and postsecondary programs.

There is no registration fee for the conference. Mileage and lodging reimbursement is available for community college participants.

Counselors are Key: Expanding Options for Nontraditional Students

Eastern Iowa Community College offered two trainings during SY 2010-11 to administration, faculty, and staff from the community college and regional high schools (September 29, 2010, and March 25, 2011). The March 25 training was focused on counselors and support service staff, and the content included data analysis and research-based strategies for counselors and support services staff to recruit and support female students in STEM programs.

Moms Night Out for STEM

Iowa STEM Equity Pipeliners-- If you would like to be a local host for 'Moms Night Out for STEM" let us know right away. It is the evening of October 18; 90 minutes of conversation, activity, and resources to help moms (and dads) plan solid STEM futures for their children. A Satellite Event of the USA Science and Engineering Festival, this is basically "an event in a box" supported by mini-grants from John Deere. Twenty communities signed on. Join us?

100% of Iowa community colleges are required to participate in the 5-step training as a condition for receiving a discretionary grant funded out of federal Carl V. Perkins. Three of the sixteen community colleges attended this workshop.
